An adorable puppy appropriately named Nubby was almost euthanized due to the simple fact that he was born without legs. The veterinarian suggested he put down just four hours after entering the world because they were concerned he wouldn’t be able to compete with his siblings for food. Fortunately, a compassionate couple wasn’t so willing to give up on the puppy and decided to offer the unique canine a safe haven. Lou Robinson, Nubby’s foster mom, told The Dodo:
“His siblings were pushing him out of the way. He would have perished. He came home with me.”
She, along with her husband, gave the rescued pup all the love and comfort it needed. Of course, plenty of research was required to ensure they could adequately care for Nubby. For instance, it was learned that the puppy would need to be bottle-fed at an incline to ensure that the formula wouldn’t be inhaled into his lungs. However, they managed.
“Day three came and went, day seven, day 10, day 16 and Nubby thrived. He thrived!” said Robinson. “His eyes opened, his ears developed, he found his sounds, smells and voice.”
Robinson was the right individual to adopt Nubby, as she is a longtime animal rights activist and founded the group Warriors Educate About Rescue based in Houston, Texas. Through the organization, she teaches classes on how to compassionately care for animals.
Though there were some trials raising Nubby, particularly to do with an “esophageal abnormality,” the puppy seems determined to live and is beginning to improve after receiving an IV treatment and heavy-duty antibiotics. When he gets older, veterinarians will probe to determine whether the complication which caused him to blow bubbles out of his nose and stop pooping is permanent. “We have no idea,” says Robinson.
For now, the couple is enthusiastic about keeping Nubby healthy and even has plans to enlist him as an advocate for Warrior Educate About Rescue when he comes of age. For now, they’re praying that the pocket form in his esophagus that was trapping milk resolves, and that he is able to one day live a relatively normal life.
