A TikTok video showcasing a young woman’s tree-planting feat in Canada’s Saskatchewan Province has rapidly garnered an astounding 8.7 million views after she managed to plant 4,545 trees in a single day.

Leslie Dart, the creator of the video, isn’t engaged in forestry by profession; rather, she recently embarked on a career in aerospace manufacturing after graduating from Durham College in Ontario.

Although tree planting is a prevalent summer job for university students, it captivates individuals like Leslie with its profound yet repetitive significance. Despite clocking up to 15 hours a day, Leslie meticulously wields a spade to penetrate the soil, excavates a space, deposits a sapling, firmly presses it with her boot, and proceeds to the next one.

This rigorous tree-planting work is mandated by specific provincial regulations to complement logging activities. Nearly every tree harvested to sustain Canada’s flourishing timber industry necessities reintegration through the efforts of paid volunteers like Leslie. She earns between 17 and 44 cents for each planted seedling and has been responsible for planting an impressive total of 372,290 trees during the past three summers.

The terrain for this endeavor can range from scorched landscapes left behind by wildfires to the humid, uneven ground of logged forests, often overgrown with spikey Devil’s Club and teeming with mosquitos. Regardless of the challenges, Leslie emphasizes that the work is exceptionally fulfilling, becoming an integral part of one’s life that draws them back year after year to contribute as volunteers.

Kenny Chaplin, a veteran planter of 35 summers and works in the film industry, as well as a substitute teacher, explained to the Terrace Standard, “I think every parent in Canada should be sending their kid out tree planting because it will take your child and it’ll turn them into a worker,”

“They’ll learn how to work, they’ll have responsibility. They’ll have money in their pockets,” Chaplin said.

Meanwhile, another tree planter, Rita Leistner, who also happens to be a photographer and filmmaker that happened to work as a war reporter during Iraq War II, told Terrace Standard, “When I worked in war zones, and people asked me: what prepared me for that work, I told them: tree planting in Canada.”

This commitment to reforestation, both in response to logging activities and post-forest fires, has resulted in the replanting of a staggering 1.6 billion trees across western Canadian provinces. Individuals like Leslie Dart and others dedicated to the cause play an instrumental role in achieving this substantial reforestation effort.
