Prince William is more than the heir to the British throne, he’s an inspirational activist to many. Recently, the Duke of Cambridge appeared on the cover of Attitude, a U.K. gay lifestyle magazine. Newsweek relays that the Prince is the first in the royal family to grace the cover of such a publication, which is why the news has gone viral.

The 33-year-old heir was photographed by Leigh Kelly at Kensington Palace for the feature which will be published in July. He also discussed with the publication’s editor, Matthew Todd, about the impact of bullying and mental health in the LGBT+ community.

Said Prince William:

“No one should be bullied for their sexuality or any other reason and no one should have to put up with the kind of hate that these young people have endured in their lives. The young gay, lesbian and transgender individuals I met through Attitude are truly brave to speak out and to give hope to people who are going through terrible bullying right now. Their sense of strength and optimism should give us all encouragement to stand up to bullying wherever we see it.”

“What I would say to any young person reading this who’s being bullied for their sexuality: don’t put up with it—speak to a trusted adult, a friend, a teacher, Childline, Diana Award or some other service and get the help you need. You should be proud of the person you are and you have nothing to be ashamed of.”

This message couldn’t be more timely, as America is still recovering from the horrendous Orlando shooting which took place at a gay bar last Sunday. At least 50 individuals were murdered, and at least 50 more were injured. The intolerance for peoples’ varying beliefs and sexual preferences has resulted in too much hate, which is why William agreed to be featured on the cover of the magazine.

According to a spokesperson at Kensington Palace, William was moved to speak out against bullying because of the stories he heard and the spirit the people maintained, despite the hardships they had endured.

It seems clear that great strides are being made by the royal family to reflect the changing times. And, the efforts are being positively received by many members of the public.

Robert Jobson, the leading royal commentator, told Newsweek:

“This shows the royal family are very happy to embrace all walks of life, all genders, all sexual preferences. The royal family has been embracing sexual equality and gender equality for a long time.”

The world is grappling to accept needed change. If more people could speak out like Prince William, promoting the idea of acceptance versus hate, positive transformation would surely ensue.
