In today’s society, it’s not easy to ‘come out of the closet’. First of all, your parents likely have expectations for you and your future, and liking – or even marrying – someone of the same sex is still a cultural taboo in many ways.
Luckily, society’s mentality concerning varying sexual preferences seems to be – slowly, but surely – evolving. In the past, if an individual told their parents they liked people of the same sex, they were likely to be disowned, or the preference was deemed to be a ‘choice’ that could be changed.
If you’re reading this, you’re probably aware that for most people, it isn’t a choice. It’s like love. Sometimes, you just can’t help it. Two parents who understand this showed their support to their daughter in a fantastic and creative way.
Bored Panda relays that the parents of 17-year-old Kinsey Ratzman learned their daughter was a lesbian and decided to throw a surprise ‘Pride Party.’ They invited friends and family members to their New Jersey-based home, covered the entire house with rainbow-themed decorations, and even made a bunch of rainbow-colored food. Kinsey’s aunt even baked a “vegan gay cake,” because Kinsey chooses to abstain from consuming animal products.
The teen had no idea about the party, as she was told the family was gathering for an early 4th of July party. Imagine her surprise – and delight – to see what her parents had in store for her. Imagine if more families accepted their children and their life choices so wholesomely and completely!
When 17-year-old Kinsey came out to her parents, she didn’t know how they’d react.
Luckily, they saw it as an opportunity to celebrate their unique daughter!
They invited family members and decorated the house in rainbow-colored decorations!
Everything was colorful, including the (vegan) cake!

It’s been a trying time for the LGBT community since the devastating Pulse nightclub shooting in Florida, but stories such as this one are a reminder that good people do exist and that positive change is taking place.
