Dogs are referred to as ‘man’s best friend’ because they really are. Is there any better feeling than coming home to an elated pup who can’t keep themselves still because they’re so excited to see you? Probably not.

Of course, one of the inevitabilities of life is that all things eventually die – including man’s best friend. To cope with this reality and pay tribute to a beautiful chocolate lab named Bella – who was diagnosed with bone cancer, a man named Robert Kugler decided to go one last trip with his canine.

Bored Panda relays that in May 2015, Kugler was informed that the lab with osteosarcoma needed to have her front leg amputated or be put down. In result, exactly that happened. However, Bella was given three to six months to live because the cancer had spread to her lungs.

Understanding that the lab’s time was running out, Kugler decided he and his furry best friend should have one last epic adventure. They left their home in Nebraska and traveled to many places in the nation, including Chicago, Key West, Nashville, and Savannah.

Here’s the kicker, though. It’s been 14 months since Bella had her leg amputated, and she and Kugler are still enjoying life together! At present, they’re still traveling the country.

The happy dog owner wrote on Instagram:

“Bella is doing pretty darn awesome.”

Following are some photos of Bella and Robert’s epic journey:
