It’s been five years in the making, but all 279 New York Subway stations finally have free wi-fi. How’s that for beginning the new year on a positive note?
The service is being offered by Transit Wireless, the internet company in charge of the newly-accessible network. After partnering with Metropolitan Transit Authority in 2010, the project to deliver free wi-fi to 2.6 billion passengers who use the subway every year went live on new Year’s eve. This initiative intends to keep those who lack cellular service in the subway connected.
To join a network, all one needs to do is to choose TransitWirelessWiFi as a wi-fi option. The service will last for one hour as the commuter travels from station to station. If the service expires, the traveler just needs to sign in again and they’ll receive another hour of free wi-fi.
As Engadget points out, cellular service is currently limited, which means the service may go offline in between stops. However, full coverage will be provided near the end of 2017.
