Constipation is a result of many factors and could also be one of the predominant symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome. People with IBS find certain foods difficult to digest, with most kinds causing irritation to their bowels. This in turn leads to a malfunction in bowel movement which could either be hypermotility (too fast) that can lead to diarrhea, or hypomotility (too slow), which can lead to constipation.

Diet modification has been found to help relieve constipation due to IBS. Foods high in Fermentable Oligo-saccharides, Disaccharides, Monosaccharides, and Polyols (FODMAP) have been found to cause IBS in certain patients which is why removing them from the diet for some time is advised.

A low FODMAP diet helps but doing it alone is not enough. The regimen should be supplemented by regular water and fiber intake to make it more effective.
