Dehydration can make you constipated, thanks to the body trying to conserve every drop of water to prevent it from malfunctioning. When one isn’t properly hydrated, the body tries to pull moisture from whatever it could, including the contents of your gut. This results in harder, drier stool that is difficult to pass smoothly and therefore ending up stuck, unable to find its way out.

One way to prevent this is to keep yourself well hydrated by increasing your water intake to at least 8 glasses daily. If you are already constipated, you may find relief by drinking sparkling (carbonated) water to slowly be able to pass stool as it has been found by studies to be more effective in relieving the condition. But remember, carbonated drinks such as sugar-filled soda and juices are not the same as sparkling water and should not be used because they could make constipation worse and are known to cause more problems health-wise.
