While some signs can be obvious and easy to recognize there are other signs that are more difficult to notice. It’s important to learn the signs in order to get help with either an inpatient or outpatient treatment center.

1. Alcohol Tolerance Increase

Because our bodies have the ability to adapt they can adapt to alcohol also. If you or your loved one are building up your alcohol tolerance and increasing how much you drink this is a sign of alcohol abuse.

Alcoholics have to continue increasing their drink intake in order to still feel a “buzz.”

2. Lying

People abusing alcohol have feelings of guilt because they are afraid of friends and family judging them which leads to lying about how much they’re drinking. Those abusing alcohol will drink by themselves to avoid dealing with anyone questioning their drinking habit.

They will lie about how much they’re drinking on a regular basis if anyone questions them. This eventually starts to affect all the relationships in a person’s life.

3. Responsibilities Take a Back Burner

If you or your loved one start to miss work or school due to alcohol this is a sign that it’s being abused. Drinking on a regular basis makes it difficult to manage responsibilities.

Being under the influence of alcohol makes people make decisions they normally wouldn’t make because their judgment is clouded. Look out for missing abnormal days of work or school. Alcohol abusers spend their time drinking and dealing with hangovers instead of tending to their day to day needs and responsibilities.

4. Physical Signs

Abusing alcohol eventually begins to show on the body as premature aging. Nails can become more fragile, skin becomes flushed, wrinkles can begin to form, and alcohol breath will be noticeable.

Some alcohol abusers might stop taking showers for days or even weeks. Long term alcohol will affect the teeth, liver, eyes, and stomach.

5. Denial

This is a way to tell if you or a loved one is abusing alcohol. Not being able to admit that there is a problem or attempting to rationalize the drinking habit. Some might even push it as far as blaming their stressful job or relationship for their drinking.

If friends and family point out their habit they might reply by “you’re exaggerating” because they are living in denial that there is an issue at hand.
