A married couple died by suicide and left behind notes saying that they had been struggling to pay for their amounting medical bills.

Brian Jones, a 77-year-old from Ferndale, Washington called 911 on August 7 at 8:30 a.m. telling the dispatcher of his suicide plans. The dispatcher on other end of the call tried to keep Jones talking, but couldn’t make him stay on the line for much longer.

Jones said: ‘I am going to shoot myself.’ He also mentioned that he would leave behind a note with all the instructions and information needed to be followed. His last words were: ‘we will be in the front bedroom’.

When 911 arrived in the Jones home, they set up a perimeter wall around the property with a crisis negotiatior trying to make contact with the couple for an hour, but proved unsuccessful.

They then deployed a robot mounted camera and that’s when authorities found the dead bodies of Jones and his wife, Patricia Whitney-Jones, then 76 years old, lying down beside each other. Based on investigations, it seems that Jones’ death was self-inflicted, whereas his wife’s was not. The deaths are still being investigated as a murder-suicide, according to the Lynden Tribune.

Information according to a press release stated that several notes were seen throughout the home which detailed that the couple had struggles to pay for their mounting medical bills:

[The notes cited] severe ongoing medical problems with the wife and expressing concerns that the couple did not have sufficient resources to pay for medical care.

Sheriff Bill Elfo from the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office said this in a statement:

“It is very tragic that one of our senior citizens would find himself in such desperate circumstances where he felt murder and suicide were the only option. Help is always available with a call to 911.”

He also told Fox News: “We do what we can to help them, We can’t solve all their healthcare needs, but we can help them until a better day comes.”

Sherrie Schulteis, a neighbour of the couple also gave comments to the Lynden Tribune:

[The husband and I] were always waving and talking about our yards or our flowers.

It’s a little tiny community where we all know each other, but we don’t really know each other.

Jones and wife left behind two dogs in their home which were turned over to the Humane Society, along with ‘numerous’ firearms that were all impounded.
