Canadian judge Pierre Chevalier recently highlighted how the drug policy in the country is changing, with a recent ruling where he spared a marijuana grower from going to prison. 46-year-old Mario Larouche was caught growing 30 marijuana plants for his own personal consumption, and was arrested under the current drug laws. Although the incoming party has promised to legalize marijuana, the laws against the herb are still on the books and could still result in fines and prison time for people who are caught with it.

However, when Larouche arrived in court he discovered that the judge was actually on his side. Instead of sending the man to jail, the judge gave him a fine of $1.30 and expressed his frustration with the country’s drug laws.

After the ruling Chevalier said, We are in a society where people are accused of possession and use of marijuana while more than half the population has already consumed. These are laws that are obsolete and ridiculous. When one is in the presence of laws which would have more than half of the population has a criminal record in Canada… And probably most Crown Attorneys and defense, and perhaps judges, but I will not comment on it.”

“Monsieur is in a broken system where it does not give people access to a natural medicine that goes back centuries, millennia,” he added.

Prohibitions of any kind should be opposed, for the reasons I have laid out in the past. However, marijuana is of a specific immediate importance though, because of its ability to heal sick people and create more environmentally friendly industrial products. It is also one of the safest drugs known to our species.

In reality, a prohibition of any kind is a scam, and the drug war is a racket of many prohibitions. What the drug war actually accomplishes is the establishment of black markets and gangs, the erosion of personal liberties, the expansion of the prison system and prison population as well as a constant excuse for frivolous government spending. This hypothesis has been tested time and time again, anytime throughout history where a ruling power has prohibited the consumption or possession of any item whatsoever.

A new study, published in the journal, ‘Scientific Reports,’ suggests that smoking cannabis is roughly 114 times safer than drinking alcohol. Ironically, out of all the drugs that were researched in the study, alcohol was actually the most dangerous, and it was the only legal drug on the list.
