So people are wondering, if pythons don’t usually go after people, then why did Akbar get killed and eaten by one? Rahmansyah, an Agriculture expert who works at the Hasanuddin University in Makassar, gives some insight. It could be that due to the growth of Palm Oil Harvesting Industry that snakes are losing their natural habitats to the growing trade, as they are deforesting and taking up more land.

Destroyed Habitats

Rahmansyah explains, “Because the habitat is destroyed, the snake’s natural food sources are also affected. Thus, the snake went out to the palm oil plantation to seek prey.” Basically, because their natural habitats are getting smaller, the lecturer continues, “It’s becoming more difficult for the animals to find their natural food,” so they will look for food wherever they can find it in order to survive. It’s Darwin’s theory of ‘Survival Of The Fittest’ to a tee.
