Local Police In Winnipeg, Manitoba Tear Down Homeless Shelters In The Freezing Winter Without Any Warning

The homeless residents have a bleak and freezing winter ahead of them after the Canada Manitoba province police tore down their donated warming huts in the city.

These warming huts were built by the students from Stonewall Collegiate and installed by the Urban Knights and Ladies Peace Patrol community. They were purposely built to give much-needed shelter to those unhoused veterans, as well as all the homeless people in the area.

Vice president of the community group, Alina Beda said that her and the other local organizers are devastated when the police dismantled the project. She told CTV News:

“We try to help the homeless people … I try to help. I go see the homeless people. I take packages for them of clean clothes, underwear, and food for them to keep going, because I know it’s hard.”

Beda also asked for permission from the indigenous Manitoba Métis Federation because their building is adjacent to the location they chose for erecting the structures.

“It was heartbreaking when we just found out … We went to see the Métis Nation because they were just beside, and we talked to the homeless people, and they were very excited, very happy about it. They said it was a very good idea, so I don’t know what the city had a problem with,” Beda added.

Unfortunately, after the installation of the infrastructures, the city officials accused the ones responsible for building these shelters on city-owned property without first seeking any clearances from the municipal government, or much less, notifying any city representative about this humanitarian project.

As reported by Global News, Sgt. Brian Chrupalo from the Winnipeg police said:

“They should have had permission if they were going to do an initiative such as this.

We appreciate their efforts, but at the same time, the focus wasn’t in the right direction. It would’ve been a lot better if they’d contacted the End Homelessness Committee and had some conversations about what we’re doing with that organization.”

After the incident, the Urban Knights and Ladies made a call to the city to apologize and ask for the $5,000 compensation they spent on the huts. Most of the money used in this project was raised by the students of Stonewall Collegiate, who worked hard in order to raise this amount of money.

John Loochuk, vice principal of Stonewall Collegiate said that his students were really enthusiastic about this project and added:

“It was awesome that they wanted to help others and the Urban Knights said that they had a need for this … Our kids were just really fired up to be helping others.”

As for Beda, the project is still extending their help to people experiencing homelessness. She hopes that their future efforts into helping their fellow citizens won’t put them in the same situation as now.

“We will try to contact [the city] and work with the Councillor or the Mayor or whoever will be involved,” said Beda.
