A 23-year-old mother was shot dead recently after an hour stand-off in her home with police. Korryn Gaines barricaded herself in the house with a shotgun, allegedly firing two shots towards police that resulted in police shooting and killing her as well as wounding her 5-year-old son.
Reportedly, police were only coming to arrest Gaines on an outstanding warrant for not having a legal license plate on her vehicle. Instead, she had a cardboard sign that read “Any government official who compromises this pursuit of happiness and right to travel will be held criminally responsible and fined, as this is a natural right and freedom.” The car was also unregistered and uninsured – illegal in the state of Maryland (and every other state in the country).
While she was pulled over, Gaines allegedly stated that the cops were trying to “steal her car” and would have to “murder her” to get her out of the vehicle. Officers pulled her out of the car while she shouted “record this” to the crowd of people that had gathered around her.
She was released on bail and assigned a court date, for which she did not appear. By federal law, missing a court date will result in another arrest and another court date.
When officers approached her house with an arrest warrant, Gaines threatened officers while sharing live video on social media sites during the standoff. After hours of a stand-off where police and mental health professionals attempted to talk her down, she is on record stating, “if you don’t leave, I’m going to kill you”.
In response, an officer shot at her, to which Gaines fired two shots back that missed, prompting the officer to return fire that killed her and wounded her young son.
According to Gaines’ social media accounts, as well as her followers, Gaines had been “targeted” since May. She believed that state and federal laws do not apply to her, stating that “constitutional law is the only true law”, implying that any other law is “criminal” or “corporate” law.
Fortunately, Gaines’ son is expected to make a full recovery.
