Jimmy Carter Invests In Solar Farm To Meet 50% Of Town’s Energy Needs

The former United States President leased 10 acres of his land to SolAmerica to build a 1.3-megawatt solar farm.

Though former U.S. President Jimmy Carter left the White House over thirty years ago, he’s still investing in initiatives to better the lives of the American people. In February, for instance, Carter leased out 10 acres of his land to SolAmerica in Plains, Georgia, to create a  1.3 MW solar project solar farm to power the nearby city.

Said Carter at the ribbon cutting ceremony:

“Distributed, clean energy generation is critical to meeting growing energy needs around the world while fighting the effects of climate change. I am encouraged by the tremendous progress that solar and other clean energy solutions have made in recent years and expect those trends to continue.”

SolAmerica, the renewable energy company responsible for the farm, reports that over the next twenty-five years, the panels will generate over 55 million kilowatt hours of clean energy. All in all, the amount produced will supply about 50 percent of the town’s power  roughly the equivalent of burning about 3,600 tons of coal per year!

SolAmerica executive vice president George Mori commented,

“We are honored to work with President Carter and his family on this project in Plains, as President Carter’s leadership on renewable energy matters is well known and much appreciated in our industry. Through a 25-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Georgia Power, this project will help expand the growth of renewable energy assets in Georgia, while contributing to the overall economy of Plains.”
