The experience of a lifetime will soon be available to Italy’s public. Thanks to artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude, a floating walkway now exists on Lake Iseo in northern Italy.

The installation – “The Floating Piers” – will remain there for the next three weeks. It opened on Saturday and will continue to be accessible to the public until July 3rd. Best of all, the incredible experience is free to all who are interested in walking on water.

Christo told the press:

“Like all of our projects, ‘The Floating Piers’ is absolutely free and accessible 24 hours a day, weather permitting.”

Bored Panda relays that the floating walkway is approximately 3km – or 2 miles – long and is made of 200,000 high-density polyethylene cubes. It’s also covered with 100,000 square meters of yellow fabric which changes colors throughout the day to a shimmering gold and a reddish hue when it is wet.

Visitors who want to take advantage of the magnificent installation can travel from Sulzano to Monte Isola and to the island of San Paola, which the walkway encircles.

“They will feel the movement of the water under foot. It will be very sexy, a bit like walking on a water bed,” said Christo.

The artist recommends that visitors walk barefoot on the water for the ultimate experience.

Anyone may walk on the water whenever they please – which, granted, could be a little risky – as “there are no tickets, no openings, no reservations and no owners.”

According to the artist,

“The Floating Piers are an extension of the street and belong to everyone.”
