Homeless Vet Gives Woman His Last $20, Has No Idea It Will Change His Life Forever

This homeless veteran used his last $20 to help a woman in need. In return, she ended up changing his life.

A chance encounter between a homeless man and a compassionate woman in need ended up changing both of their lives for the better. It all began when Kate McClure, 27, was driving to Philadelphia to visit a friend and ran out of gas on Interstate 95.

Fortunately for her, a man named Johnny was nearby, and he happened to be homeless. Wrote McClure,

“He saw me pull over and knew something was wrong. He told me to get back in the car and lock the doors. A few minutes later, he comes back with a red gas can. Using his last 20 dollars to make sure I could get home safe.”

At the time, she couldn’t repay him because she was carrying no cash. But Johnny wasn’t concerned about the money — even though it was his last $20. He was just happy to help someone else in need.

Inspired by his generosity, McClure pledged to return. She wrote,

“I have been stopping by his spot for the past few weeks. I repaid him for the gas, gave him a jacket, gloves, a hat, and warm socks, and I give him a few dollars every time I see him.”

One day, after buying a few cereal bars for Johnny, he asked her: “Do you want one?” Once again, she was blown away by his generosity. This led her to start a crowdfunding campaign on GoFundMe, which had an initial goal of $10,000.

She informed supporters: “He is very interested in finding a job, and I believe that with a place to be able to clean up every night and get a good night’s rest, his life can get back to being normal.” McClure says that Johnny was an ammunition technician in the Marines, as well as a firefighter and paramedic before hard times fell on him.

Others were clearly moved by his example. Before long, the crowdfunding campaign reached $100,000! Johnny asked for it to be taken down then, as he didn’t want to take advantage of the situation. But McClure ended up restarting it again because people still wanted to help him.

Johnny is more than happy with the help he has received and has asked for the excess to be donated to good causes. This reflects the type of person he is deep down. The New York Post reports that Johnny seeks to get a job at an Amazon warehouse in Robbinsville, New Jersey. Fortunately for him, a recruit from the tech company has already reached out, saying she’d like to help him secure a spot.
