A homeless man has been begging people on the streets to provide him with a job instead of loose change so he can properly take care of his son. For the past year, 35-year-old Carl Young has been sleeping on the streets after leaving his previous home in East Hull where he was living with his ex-partner together with their two-year-old son. He said he has slept in all kinds of places throughout the year, like random doorway entrances, public sheds, doorways and even tents, just to find shelter for the night and admits that it has been rough to be without a home.
Young has a placard he carries around that advertises himself as a skilled worker. “I just sit there with a sign and it says available for work and I try and get work from that. I don’t do heroin or anything like that. I don’t spend my money on drugs and it all goes towards my son. Whatever I earn, he will have more than half of that and then I keep a bit back to look after myself. I get excited whenever I do get to see him and it’s hard when I don’t. I just can’t wait to see him and chat with him and build a bond with him. That can never be taken away from me,” Young said.
When he gets paid for odd jobs, he gives his son some money in an envelope. As much as he has tried to buy a house of his own, he feels as if he is being prevented to do so because of his crime record, which he committed as a teen.
“I’ve been told because I’ve got arson on my record from when I was 13, I can’t get a property because of that. How long ago was that? I’m 35 now and it feels they are still using that to stop me getting one of those properties. It’s wrong.”
He is usually seen in Beverely advertising his skills with his placard on hand, something that he has been doing for the last couple of months.
Another inspiring thing he said was: “I am not asking for coins, I want change.”
