Half A Million Bees Attacked, Drowned And Burned In Texas – But With No Eyewitnesses

Half a million bees living in over a dozen hives have been attacked, dumped, and set on fire in a rural area in southwest Texas over the weekend. The Brazoria County Beekeepers Association (BCBA) reported on Facebook about the discovery of all damaged beehives scattered across the yard last Saturday morning. While one brood frame was seen floating across the water nearby with the bees still taking care of their eggs, several other hives were burnt to almost ash.

The BCBA said in the post that: “It’s bad enough to think in today’s world this would happen but dumping them over and then setting fire to them is beyond comprehension.”

Steven Brackman, BCBA president told the Houston Chronicle that an average of 30,000 bees live in each colony, which leads to an estimate of half a million bees being burnt to death or drowned, as 20 hives were reported to be destroyed. This concluded to be worth thousands of dollars in damages.

The county sheriff’s office made a statement to Houston’s KTRK-TV that they would have difficulty solving this case because there were no eye witnesses during the time of the attack, albeit they are still searching for the suspects that may have any relation to this incomprehensible crime. Suspects will be charged with arson and felony criminal mischief, the office said.

The Brazoria County Crime Stoppers is offering a $5,000 reward, while The BCBA, which is composed of more than 300 members is offering another $1,000 for any information that could let them to the arrest of the culprit.

Since the bees are most active during spring time because there is a massive amount of pollen that is being spread throughout the trees, which the bees use for reproduction, Brackman said that it will take at the very least a year to replace all loss of bees and honey.

“Every colony that we lose is a major catastrophe to the environment,” Brackman told local station KTRK.
