Hacker activist Aaron Swartz commits suicide

The programmer, activist, and early Reddit cofounder Aaron Swartz reportedly committed suicide yesterday in New York City. He was 26. Swartz’s death is reported confirmed by both Swartz’s uncle and his attorney to The Tech, the campus newspaper of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

In 2011, Swartz was arrested and charged for downloading two-thirds of the material on JSTOR, a repository of academic journal articles. Last year, on September 24, he pleaded not guilty to the charges against him. He had previously attracted the attention of the FBI for downloading 20% of PACER, a database of documents related to US federal court cases.

Swartz was active in the world of free culture and open source software. When he was 14, he worked on the RSS 1.0 specification, a standard for syndicating news articles in XML. He also worked on a Y Combinator-backed startup called Infogami which was merged with the popular news sharing site Reddit. Swartz also founded Demand Progress, a progressive activist group dealing with civil liberties issues.

  10. Peter  January 12, 2013 at 9:29 pm

He was murdered to make it look like a suicide. His skills were too dangerous for government. A mind that bright, has no time to think about suicide.

    • Babbs  March 24, 2013 at 11:52 pm

Your the one I agree with most!

    • Humanitarian  April 5, 2013 at 6:34 pm

Agreed! How could someone that wanted to change the world, kill themselves? Not logical.

  11. Menina  January 12, 2013 at 9:31 pm

He did NOT commit suicide! U.S.A is the name of his death! The most horrible country in the world Which is the reson to soo much evil in the world! WE dont know the whole! I dont blame the people but their leaders. Wake up World and see those who is playing with the world the evil psycopaths.

    • xiaoke77  January 12, 2013 at 11:19 pm

I probably shouldn’t even reply, but your statements are beyond ridiculous and evidence that you have not traveled, and are totally unaware of what other governments are doing to their people on a daily basis. Not saying the US is perfect- but ” the most horrible country in the world?” Total nonsense. May this man rest in peace and the truth of his death be told- suicide or not.

    • justin  January 13, 2013 at 8:19 am

the us is absolutely the the most horrible country in the world… everything this country has ever done has been in the persuit of its god the one true and holy $. America has caused more suffering more poverty more pain than any other country in human history… we live in such a backwards society that we really cant even see that anything is wrong… we dont no this man was murdered, though it would not surprise me. every great person with something important to say in the last hundred years or so has just magically died in odd and mysterious ways… it is really depressing and makes me feel like this world will not change ever

    • holy cat  January 13, 2013 at 9:54 am

xiaoke, pull your head out of the sand!

    • xiaoke77  January 13, 2013 at 12:59 pm

I love how a number of you are using me as an example of closed mindedness and ignorance. People can disagree with one another and have different perspetives without being complete lemmings. Please take note that I never said the US is the best country in the world; I simply challenged this notion being thrown out there that it is the most evil and horrible. Where are some of you from anyway? I get the sense you live in the States, but perhaps some do not. I’m really curious about what your litmus test is for making a nation “the worst”? I’m not an idiot; just not a comeplete conspiracy theorist.

    • Boncho Guentchev  January 18, 2013 at 4:02 pm

Fact: the number of deaths caused by U.S. actions (direct or indirect) in History by far outnumbers all actions by all countries in all History… combined. Do your research. I think that is a pretty good worst-country-in-the-world measurement. Of course that is not shown on CBS, therefore, is “not true”. By the way, I´m an informed person from Portugal.

    • xiaoke77  January 18, 2013 at 6:37 pm

Hi Boncho- thanks for quantifying your definition of worst country. I think you make an interesting point.

There are a variety of philosophical discussions we could get into. If you look at black and white numbers based on what you call ” direct or indirect” result of the US- you may be able to make that argument. I may or may not agree with you on what truly rests on the “US”, but thats a different discussion. As to doing the research- how do you even begin to make an honest number crunching comparison between all nations and their history to determine the numbers alone? i cant imagine its possible; and seems more like an accepted fact based on perceptions.

Personally, I don’t watch much mainstream media, and as someone who has lived all over the world- this topic really interests me. I assume you have lived in the US? Perhaps you’re even originally from here? For those who have spent no time in this country- I wonder where they get off making such accusations? As an American- if I got onto a chat site regarding another country, lets say Portugal; and I started to spout off about how Portugal is the worst country in the world- how would that be taken? It would be deemed arrogant at best.

What’s good for one is good for all.

  12. juan matin  January 12, 2013 at 9:47 pm

the same thing happen to all the wittness of the 9/11 the CIA is behind this… i bet.

  13. Muik  January 12, 2013 at 10:00 pm

Interesting how so many rebels seem to share that suicide syndrome… It’s getting old!

  14. Childof God  January 12, 2013 at 10:17 pm

Well it`s obvious that he found something he should not have. Just like all the rest. The truth is really ugly to those that don’t want to get caught. But the one good thing to come out of this is that he at least died with truth in his heart and on his lips. What the government is afraid of is… us. One day the people are going to relies that there are only a small handful of politicians but millions of people. Its coming big lie America and you wont be so proud for much longer.

    • Snakewitch  January 25, 2013 at 8:12 pm

That’s why Idle No More was started.

  15. senor  January 12, 2013 at 10:54 pm

He probably comitted suicide because he found out disgusting truth about government practices. So awful that it is too much for one men to cope with, not viable anymore.

  16. Jessica Louise  January 12, 2013 at 10:55 pm

He was in trials for the files he downloaded from MIT, and the sentence was to put him in prison for more then 20 years. Maybe he couldn’t see the light at the end of the tunnel. May he rest in peace.

  22. christian askew  January 13, 2013 at 1:01 pm

all of you idiotic conspiracy theorists! YOU are the reason people have a tendency to believe everything in the world is bad. you do nothing but point fingers at everyone and everything but yourselves. we are at fault as well. if more people were proactive in their government, more could be done. you lazy pieces of s*** always wanna complain and cry that our government is screwing us. what have you done about it, other than posting ridiculous accusations. you don’t f’ing like it, do something about it. get off your lazy, livin in your mommas basement, video game playin ass and DO SOMETHING!!!! and yes, the usa is a screwed up country, but its probably one of the best places live. ive travelled the world a bit working as a DoD contractor, and you reatards have no idea what you are talking about. hatred and misery are more prevalent in other nations. get a clue losers. AND LEARN HOW TO FUCKING SPELL! AND SOME PROPER GRAMMAR!! you want people to listen, then you need to sound educated, not stupid, like the things you are saying. maybe he was murdered, maybe he wasn’t. you have no solid evidence of murder. youre no better than the media, spreading rumors.

    RIP Aaron Swartz

    • TRUTH  January 14, 2013 at 7:25 pm

The US is one of the greatest countries to live BECAUSE it is one of the most evil and avaricious countries on the planet. It is also a lot of the reason WHY hatred and misery are prevalent in other countries. You didn’t even read or try to understand what people were saying before you threw in your stupid comment unjustifiably attacking peoples integrity. You probably just wanted to tell people you ‘travelled the world a bit as a DoD contractor’. You fucking idiot…

    • Boncho Guentchev  January 18, 2013 at 4:38 pm

Scientific fact: Buildings do not fall at free-fall speed unless explosives are used. Clever as you are, you’ll understand what I meant, and therefore, so much about “ridiculous” accusations. Advice: for a start, watch the documentary “Architects and Engineers for 9/11 Truth”.

Grammar? Did you mean, starting sentences with lower case? Or “best places live”? Or that “ive” travelled the world? Or “reatards”?

I’ve (or is it ive… I’m confused) also travelled the world through my business. Hatred? Maybe because the U.S. has invaded, either through the Military or through Debt half the world? Misery? Yes, there “aren’t” 600,000 homeless people in the U.S.

This is how we should answer… with facts and… proper grammar.

      Greetings from Portugal.

  23. P4uly.anon  January 13, 2013 at 5:01 pm

He didn’t commit suicide at all every leader of the world is just lying to us and it looks like noone is smart enough to see this

  24. c  January 13, 2013 at 5:16 pm

He hasnt gone to waste by the way… Remember, whole revolution in Tunisia started off from one guy burning himself in front of the parliament…

  25. Terry  January 13, 2013 at 7:08 pm

    Another federal government “suicide”.

  26. Thinkingone  January 14, 2013 at 11:48 pm

    RIP Aaron Swartz

  27. Lydia  January 16, 2013 at 3:10 pm

Sad sad. RIP, brilliant young hero. Obviously someone elitist and quite pampered wrote that the US is the most horrible country in the world. My family came from communist Russia where TENS OF MILLIONS of people were killed and relocated while the US thrived because of our freedoms. We are not perfect, lots of problems, but we are suree not the worst. We still have more freedoms in general than the recuperating former Soviet countries. Wake up.

  28. Blake Prince  January 17, 2013 at 5:26 pm

    RIP Aaron Swartz.
Perhaps we will never know what really happened to this guy, and if we invite all the speculations that we can think of, definitely it will not provide any solid truth. It will remain as it is, a Speculation. In these age, we need solid evidence to support our accusations.

  29. kurt kaltreider  January 17, 2013 at 11:07 pm

I do not know which country in the world is the worst, but the U.S. is definitely the greatest terrorist nation.

  30. harmony  January 18, 2013 at 3:26 pm

I do not believe he killed himself. Take a look at all these whistleblowers, scientists and people who are standing up to our government that get killed. Connect the dots and you will see what is truly going on.

  31. neil bentley  January 23, 2013 at 11:45 am

In a similar way to Dr David Kelly committing suicide,,,ye right!!!

  32. Autonomous Collective  January 24, 2013 at 9:15 am

Dr David Kelly that was the guys that Tony Blair and his cronies had bumped off. This guy got the same treatment I reckon.

  33. As  January 25, 2013 at 6:12 am

This is not suicide. I don’t believe it whatsoever.

  34. Snakewitch  January 25, 2013 at 8:16 pm

OK, if it WAS suicide, why don’t we know the cause? Anyone who claims he wasn’t killed should be the one to investigate and prove it was suicide. Cheers.

  35. b  January 26, 2013 at 9:06 am

  36. lolly  March 12, 2013 at 1:17 pm

No doubt they’ve killed him. Probably because they know that nobody will bother to do anything except argue about their opinions online all day whilst they seek out their next target.
