Not long ago, Erikas Plucas came home to the most unexpected sight – a baby moose lying alone near his gate. According to The Dodo, she couldn’t have been more than 2 weeks old. Plucas, who lives in Lithuania, could have left the baby moose to fend for itself, but instead decided to help it. After all, she was in a poor state and obviously very hungry. He recalls,

“The first sight of her was heartbreaking. She was starved, dirty, sad, her fur was infested with flies, and she was so terrified of me when she first saw me but was too weak to run away, to even get up.”

The activist carried the moose inside and promptly called animal services. Despite the calls he made to authorities and his friends, he was told by everyone to stay out of it.

“I was met with hostility and contempt. ’It is illegal, you should not do it, let nature take care of it’ was all I heard,” he recalls.

Suspecting that the calf’s mother had been shot, Plucas made the bold decision to care for the moose. He began by feeding the calf, which he named Emma, every four hours and even slept next to her in the barn or outside to ensure she felt safe.

“She was afraid of everything but me,” Plucas said.

To ensure Emma wasn’t shot by local hunters, he talked to the neighbors who all promised to keep an eye out for her. In fact, learning about the moose inspired some avid hunters to put away their guns for good! The activist explains:

“I had some hunters over for them to see her as not just a nice, warm steak with potatoes and vegetables on the table, but as a very intelligent and loving animal. Some claimed they will put down hunting rifles for good, and some promised never to shoot a moose again.”

When the moose was old enough, Plucas released her to the wild. He felt confident she could survive on her own as they’d often walk through the forest together, Plucas teaching Emma how to forage and avoid danger. Fortunately, the animal hasn’t forgotten the magical relationship and visits her human ‘dad’ every single day!

“I’m her world now and she is mine,” he says. “Sometimes I wonder was it me who saved her, or is it the other way around?”.

Now that the moose is pregnant, Plucas will likely have another visitor – which he couldn’t be happier about! Their inspiring relationship is proof that humans and wildlife can peacefully co-exist.
