Though former President George H.W. Bush planned to remain silent on the current presidential election, a recent get-together with Kathleen Kennedy Townsend caused his political preference to be made public against his will.

The former Lieutenant Governor of Maryland and the daughter of the late Robert F. Kennedy posted on Facebook about her encounter with Bush. In a photo of her shaking hands with Bush senior, she said,

“The President told me he’s voting for Hillary!!”

In an interview with Politico, Townsend confirmed that he had said he would be voting for the Democratic candidate when the pair met up in Maine. George H.W. Bush has not been so forthcoming with information on his voting preferences in this election, however.

Jim McGrath, a spokesperson for Bush, did not confirm nor deny the question of whether he would be voting for Hillary. McGrath told Politico,

“The vote President Bush will cast as a private citizen in some 50 days will be just that: a private vote cast in some 50 days. He is not commenting on the presidential race in the interim.”

Bush certainly isn’t the only Republican that would be voting for Hillary, since many Republicans refuse to support Trump. The Bush family has not vocalized their support for any candidate since their son Jeb’s campaign failed.

Other high-ranking GOP officials have announced their support for Clinton, including cabinet members from Reagan and both Bush’s administrations. However, former Vice President Dan Quayle, who served alongside George H.W. Bush, has already backed Trump and hoped that Bush would do the same. Quayle said earlier this year:

“Clearly in their heart of hearts I should hope [the Bush family] would want a Republican president, but they can speak for themselves.”

Whether it’s true or not, this news would likely not sway serious Trump supporters, but it could affect how moderate Republicans vote. Since many Republicans are uncomfortable with their candidate, some are looking for a nudge to point them in a different direction and this could be just what they’re looking for.
