Over 19,000 people donated to the cause, and by no means were all of them Muslim or even religious.
On Saturday morning, the Islamic Center of Victoria, based in Texas, burned down. While officials continue to investigate the cause of the fire, regular attendees can’t help but mourn the tragedy. Fortunately, they didn’t have to wait long before an outpouring of support was received, both in financial donations and offers to help reconstruct the building.
AboutIslam relays that a GoFundMe campaign was started almost immediately to raise funds to rebuild the establishment, and within 24 hours, the page had raised $500,000 of its $850,000 goal. One day later, that ambitious goal was met.
Those who couldn’t afford to offer monetary donations commented that they’d be more than happy to volunteer their carpentry and construction skills. Shahid Hashmi, president of the Islamic Center, wrote:
“Our hearts are filled with gratitude for the tremendous support we’ve received. The outpouring of love, kind words, hugs, helping hands and the financial contributions are examples of the true American Spirit. We’re so very much thankful and appreciative of everyone’s thoughtfulness.”
Over 19,000 people donated to the cause, and by no means were all of them Muslim or even religious. For example, Martin Wagner wrote:
“I’m an atheist and I am deeply saddened and disgusted by what was done to you. Religious freedom and freedom from persecution are fundamental rights!”
Additionally, Cody Cluff, who donated $27, added his two cents:
“Many of your countrymen love and appreciate you and those of the Muslim faith. You are a beautiful part of our community, and I’m sorry for the hatred that was done on you. May you be blessed with courage, strength, and peace.”
The local law enforcement, the FBI, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms are all looking into the incident to discern if foul play was responsible for the building’s destruction. What are your thoughts? Please comment below and share this news!
