''The champ is here! The champ is here! The champ is here!''
Considered by all boxing fans as the greatest of all time, three-time heavyweight champion Muhammad Ali passed away last Friday at the age of 74, leaving the sporting world with a huge hole that no one else might be big enough to fill for quite a while. According to a spokesperson from the family, Ali died of septic shock due to unspecified natural causes, passing away at a time when the sport of boxing is badly in need of its next great champion.
Of course, Muhammad Ali, born Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr., will be remembered not only for the greatness that he showed inside the squared circle, but also for his strong religious, political, and social stances – to which he was both commended and criticized. One of these was his refusal to be drafted for the war in Vietnam that he doesn’t believe in, another was his distaste for racial discrimination, and of course, his conversion to Islam – changing what he felt was the ‘slave’ name ‘Cassius Clay’ to what the world now know him as.
Moving at his own pace without a care what anybody thinks of him, Muhammad Ali was understandably an outspoken individual, so much so that his words – the same words that he lived by everyday to become a champion in life, will forever be a testament of his perseverance to be where he wanted to be.
You see, Ali didn’t become the greatest of all time overnight. He worked hard for him to be able to have the luxury to talk the talk and walk the walk. He is somebody who all of us can all look up to, and his words will continue to teach the rest of us how to bring out the best in us.
