The Dog Cafe has mixed two things that Americans love: dogs and coffee. With the emergence of cat cafes, where potential adopters (or just anyone that wants to stop in for coffee) can enjoy their coffee and play with cats in need of a home, people have been eagerly waiting for a dog cafe to open up, and Sarah Wolfgang is here to deliver.
Wolfgang has been volunteering with animal shelters and aiding in rescuing dogs from meat farms overseas for 16 years, so it’s only natural that she would find a way to help animals full-time and in her own way. The Dog Cafe is the first cafe of its kind to open in the United States and it’s based out of Los Angeles. It’s set to officially open on April 7th, but the shop had a soft opening a few months ago and was met with success.
Their first success story was a Chihuahua-German Shepherd named Royce who first arrived at the shop with a fear of humans after being dropped off at the shelter at less than a year old.
Wolfgang said, “Nobody wanted to adopt him, because every time you walked up to his cage, he would run to the back of his cubby.”
Once the cafe picked him up, they brought him in and within a few weeks he was completely transformed. “He actually runs up to everybody, sits in everybody’s lap,” Wolfgang told The Dodo.
During The Dog Cafe’s soft open, they already adopted out three dogs. The Cafe can home 10-14 dogs at a time but Wolfgang isn’t in any rush to adopt the pups out as quickly as possible without first checking out potential adopters thoroughly. She explained, “We’re quite picky with our adoption process. We want to ensure that each dog goes to the best home possible.”
This Cafe is an exciting new way for shelter dogs to find fur-ever homes that breaks the traditional experience of going to a shelter and picking out a dog from behind a cage. You can interact with the dogs openly at this self-described “halfway house,” and, if you’re lucky, you’ll get to take home a dog that will rescue you just as much as you rescued them.
