Dressed in a flowing white gown with her loosely-braided blonde hair running beautifully down her back, a woman is seen standing alone in a sprawling meadow, a herd of cows grazing in the far distance. Moments later, a haunting yet entrancing melody fills the air, echoing into the farthest reaches of the valley; its source, seemingly coming from deep within the woman’s soul.

The video, now circulating in the intertwined web of social media, has captured and bewitched netizens around the globe because of one woman’s amazing way to summon gentle bovines from far away. It captures how her singing seemingly casts a spell on the cattle, drawing them closer without much effort other than the sound of her beautiful voice.

As spellbinding as it is, this Scandinavian art of cattle-calling is not supernatural in origin at all but has its roots deeply imbedded in Swedish and Norwegian culture. The art of kulning which uses high-pitched songs to call herding animals back from the mountainside is less common these days but can still be witnessed and heard in parts of Northern Europe on occasion. Families pass on their herding songs from generation to generation keeping alive an age-old practice demonstrating the mystifying connection between humans and the creatures they tend to.

Jonna Jinton, the woman seen in the video, is a Scandinavian artist who left her big-city life as a university student to follow her desire to reconnect with her roots and be one with nature. Her passion for the simpler, rural lifestyle, has allowed her to once again master the almost lost art of kulning, an art she is happy to share with the world.
