Dogs are regarded as ‘man’s best friend’ for a number of reason. Not only are they incredibly loyal, they’re also empathetic to peoples’ needs. Now, new research suggests that they even dream of their humans while catching some Zzzs.

According to Dr. Dierdre Barrett, a teacher and Clinical and Evolutionary Psychologist at Harvard Medical School, canines tend to dream about their humans due to the strong emotional attachments they form with owners. Barrett told People magazine:

”Since dogs are generally extremely attached to their human owners, it’s likely your dog is dreaming of your face, your smell and of pleasing or annoying you.”

Perhaps the most interesting part of this unearthed research is the effect it has had on people. Reportedly, the article has been retweeted over 60,000 times with people relaying a range of responses. It seems knowing one’s fur baby is dreaming of them is too much to handle.

Whereas cats are most likely to dream of ‘the hunt’, canines more often than not dream of being with their humans. This finding adds a whole new meaning to ‘let sleeping dogs lie’. It might just put the owner in a better mood knowing they’re being missed!
