Students Make Use Of Alternative Energy To Make Milkshakes And School Saved $44,000 For It

People have been preaching about the benefits of the alternative form of energy. Not only is this better for the environment, it’s also cost-efficient. Unfortunately, the majority of the world have to implement this. While they are aware of the pros that come with it, many of them haven’t done much.

Changes need to be made right now, and it’s stories such as this one may inspire the rest to follow in their footsteps and finally take action. They don’t have to go big. In fact, they can start with simple changes. It’s only when they see the benefits can they truly appreciate it.

In this article, we delve into what the students at a Tasmania High School are doing. They have come up with an innovative project and are riding bikes because of their desire to actively fight climate change. So, they implemented an impressively thorough transformation of their school building. The structure has now become an inspiration for those who want to be energy efficient.

The best part about it all is that it’s paying off big time. They’ve saved a substantial amount of money, $44,000 to be exact. They’ve cut down in utility bills since they started this. But it’s more than that, they’re also inspiring other youngsters in the community to play an active role in changing and improving the planet’s future on a local scale.

Around 400 students attend Huonville High School in Australia. They recently won the Zayed Future Energy Prize of $133,000. The money they get were allotted to the different needs such as renovating the building that will serve as the Zayed Future Energy Hub. They also built a clubhouse where 13 volunteers learn and teach ideas about renewable energy and how all these can be applied to their everyday lives.

Among the many modifications they made, they also installed solar panels on the roof. Plus, they replaced the old windows they had with double and triple glazed ones. Then, they placed improved insulation and energy efficient curtains to go with it. That’s not all too. They now have stationary bikes that have the ability to create electricity to cook food. This was featured in ABC News Australia and this was where they showcased how they made donuts with the new method.

Because the classroom they worked in was oftentimes cold early in the morning, they also made changes without giving off carbon emissions through the heaters. What they did was get a pellet stove. When this didn’t help much, they also added a pellet mill that makes fuel from waste sawdust. With this, they were kept warm and comfortable while they worked.

They had managed to power one small building on a high school campus and cook donuts in renewable fat fryers. While this is already impressive on its own, they challenged themselves to an even bigger feat. Their thirst to slow down global climate change is unquenchable at this point, but the Hub is much more about the making a general impact to the rest of the world. Nel Smit is a volunteer teacher-head of the Hub. He is aware of just how important this is to future generations. He hopes that their efforts will excite the rest to follow in their footsteps and make even bigger changes.

Smit shared, “This little school in the Huon Valley, is actually doing amazing things,” Smit told ABC. “It’s raised awareness of renewable energy, energy efficiency, and opportunities in the community for engaging them around that sort of technology.”

The project is now in its fifth year, and the best part about it is that the adults have joined in as well because they were inspired by these teenagers.

“Being part of Zayed has definitely helped me feel like I’m doing something. I’m making a change, and that has reassured me to not be so worried or frustrated with the world,” Zayed Hub volunteer and student Aisha Fisher said.

“Belief that it’s possible to stop it is the key, I believe,” Christopher Allen, another Hub Volunteer, also said. He then added, “We can act as young people, no matter your age, you have a voice and any action counts.”
