Though it might not seem like it from the outside, nearly everyone you meet suffers from some form of insecurity. Young people, especially, are hyper-sensitive to the critique of others, undoubtedly because society promotes difficult-to-attain body ideals, as well as the message that one is never good enough. The repercussion of such are increasing rates of eating disorders, body dysmorphia, and low self-esteem.
To highlight the fact that pretty much everyone suffers from some form of insecurity (not feeling pretty, smart, motivated, etc… enough to succeed), photographer Marije Dijkema partnered with actor Jeroen Groothof Schröder to craft an emotional series that shows “the painful truth the world doesn’t want to see.”
The artist argues that millennials are bombarded by insecurities and self-doubts as they try to meet the high standards and ‘seeming perfection‘ of others, and the result is inner turmoil. By starting a dialogue about the suffering many people share, Dijkema hopes positive change might result.
