Inventor and entrepreneur Elon Musk recently discussed his plans of creating an electric powered jet during a question-and-answer session at the Hyperloop Pod competition in Texas.
During the event, Musk said, “I’ve been thinking about the vertical take- off and landing electric jet a bit more. I think I have something that might [be] close. I’m quite tempted to do something about it.”
After making that bold claim, one of the audience members asked Musk, “How do you convince people that your ideas aren’t crazy?”
Musk replied by saying, “In starting SpaceX, they definitely thought I was crazy. One of my best friends compiled a long video of rockets crashing and made me watch the whole thing. Other friends involved in a rocket startup said it was a terrible idea, and I thought we had a really tiny chance of succeeding anyway, like 10%… and it was very close [to failure] but I think, ultimately, seeing is believing… that’s what convinces people.”
Musk has hinted at the idea of an electric jet in the past. Speaking in an interview with Marketplace in October 2015, Musk said: “I do like the idea of an electric aircraft company. I do think one could do a pretty cool supersonic, vertical take-off and landing electric jet. That would be really fun.”
Again in 2014, during an interview at MIT, Musk again hinted at the idea, saying that he was “toying” with the idea of an electric jet.
As we reported last year, Musk announced the formation of OpenAI, which he promises will be “a non-profit artificial intelligence research company,” with the goal to “advance digital intelligence in the way that is most likely to benefit humanity as a whole, unconstrained by a need to generate financial return.”
In a recent interview, Musk talked about the need for a more free society, and even admitted that he was friendly to the ideas of anarchism.
He also built an alternative school for his children and went on to describe the process of “unschooling” that his children are involved with. Musk is the CEO and CTO of SpaceX, CEO and product architect of Tesla Motors and chairman of SolarCity. He is also the founder of SpaceX and a co-founder of PayPal.
