A tragedy recently occurred in the city of Dongtai, China, where police officers have reportedly been culling stray dogs in an effort to “clean and civilize” the city. According to the Daily Mail, local police pulled an elderly man’s two dogs from his house and beat them to death in front of him. PETA Asia says the man in his 70’s was caring for the formerly stray dogs, whereas the police say the dogs were “large” and “vicious,” and that the man himself requested they be killed after they explained to him why they should die.

The elderly man, whose surname is Chen, reportedly works as a security guard in a garage and rents a room inside the facility. After adopting the stray dogs, Chen would oftentimes keep the canines chained to trees and posts on the sides of the streets because he lacked the space to care for them indoors. Officials claim they received complaints from neighbors and permission from Chen himself, which is why they stormed the home, dragged the animals out, and beat them with wooden sticks.

After the dogs were murdered, Chen was told to pick up their bodies and put them next to a lamp post where they regularly were chained, according to an officer with PETA Asia. To prove the dogs were strays, the police then took pictures of the dogs. Videos and pictures supplied by onlookers were also obtained.

“Dongtai city started culling stray dogs because they wanted to be named a ‘clean and civilised city’,” said PETA Asia. The organization went on to say that the dog catching team established by the Dontai police is not actually part of the police. Rather, it is managed by an urban management team. Said PETA Asia, “The team would receive 100 yuan (£11) for every dog they beat, and they have a target.”

After posts about the incident went viral on Chinese social media, they were immediately taken down. When Animals Asia Foundation condemned the ordeal on social media on July 11, 2017, however, the story was picked up and went viral. Once upset individuals begin contacting the Dontai Public Security Bureau, it was admitted that they had been culling dogs, according to the foundation. The Animals Asia Foundation now says it will send a petition to the authority to help improve policies on stray animals and pets.

PETA Asia is sharing one story, which has been countered by the Dongtai Public Security Bureau. What does seem clear from the images is that Chen was disturbed by the swift action taken by authorities. What are your thoughts? Please comment below and share this news!
