Dog Spends Over an Hour Pulling Injured Owner To Phone To Call 911

When Janet Wilhem, a nurse from McKinney, Texas, painfully fell in her garage and fractured her hip in five places, she knew she needed help but wasn’t sure how to get it.

Her husband wasn’t expected to be home for another eight hours, and the nearest phone she could use to call for help was 20 feet away.

Luckily, she had Mabel, a black Labrador she’d rescued three years earlier, to comfort her. But Mabel intended to do much more.

When Wilhem reached out to Mabel’s collar, the dog started backing up. Janet thought Mabel was trying to get away, so let go. It took her a while to realize Mabel was dragging her toward the phone.

For an hour-and-a-half, Mabel kept pulling Wilhem across the floor until she could reach the phone and call for an ambulance.

The bravery and intelligence of Mabel saved Janet from a much more complicated recovery, say her doctors.

Wilhelm tearfully told WFAA News:

“I was so happy she was there. I said ‘Good girl, I love you, I love you.’ I was just so happy.”
