Detroit, Michigan is known for its brutal winters, so when Terri Looby, a volunteer with Detroit Animal Welfare Group (DAWG) received a call a few days before Christmas that there was a small dog walking the streets, she used her lunch break to locate the poor dog.
Looby and a coworker set out to find the dog, driving up and down the street, but didn’t see anything until they passed a heap of trash waiting for curbside pickup.
“There were some boxes, trash bags and a chair sitting at the curb for pickup day,” Looby told The Dodo. “As we passed the trash, I noticed that there was a dog curled up in the tightest little ball possible.”
The dog was just trying to keep warm in the subzero temperatures, surrounded by snow, and Looby knew he needed help. Even though he didn’t fit the “small dog” description, she lured him into her car with the smell of a chicken patty wafting throughout the car. Even though he had been wronged by the humans that left him behind, he was quick to trust Looby. She said,
“As soon as the dog heard us, he picked his head up and looked at me. I said, ‘Hi baby, it’s OK. Come see me.’ His tail was wagging, and he jumped off the chair and started limping toward me. He knew he was safe!”
As they were about to pull away, a neighbor attempted to stop them and explained the situation. The owners had been evicted from their place months ago and the landlords forced the dogs out of the house afterwards, leaving both a small dog and Ollie-Loo, the name Looby gave this sweet pit bull, on the streets. The owners had passed by to pick up the small dog but had left Ollie-Loo behind. Looby guessed that Ollie-Loo had likely been outside or at least starving for two weeks judging on the visibility of his ribs.
One look at Ollie-Loo’s gait and one might see why the owners decided they couldn’t bring Ollie-Loo, however cruel it was to leave him behind: he was limping from an injury he had sustained in the last week. When he was taken to the vet later that day, vets determined the reason behind Ollie-Loo’s limp; his femur bone had been broken very recently.
He had no microchip and one look inside his mouth helped vets conclude that he was just 1.5 years old, still a baby wanting love and warmth and training. He was able to go home with a nice foster family, who would agree with what Looby had to say about Ollie-Loo’s demeanor:
“Ollie-Loo enjoys being with his fosters, whether it is laying on the couch, curled up in bed or just laying in a dog bed that’s a little too small for him. Ollie-Loo has been a very sweet, happy, tail-wagging puppy who just wants a family to love him and not toss him out like he is trash.”
Fortunately, Ollie-Loo was able to have surgery to repair his break and insert a plate to keep his leg straight. Since then, he has been adopted by his new dad, named Art, and his loving family so that he won’t ever be thrown out with the trash again.
