Despite animal abuse now considered to be a felony on par with homicide, arson, assault, and drug kingpins in the United States, a deputy of the Ramsey County Sheriff’s Department, in Minnesota, is walking away with nothing more than a slap on the wrist after being caught on film abusing his K9 partner.

KARE 11 News reports that Deputy Brett Berry pleaded guilty to charges of animal cruelty against Boone, his canine partner, after an incriminating incident which took place last June and was captured on camera was revealed.

Surveillance footage taken at the scene of a casino parking lot where the officer was training Boone shows Berry repeatedly striking the dog and throwing him against the ground.

Boone, who is trained to put his life on the line every day for his companion, appears confused by Berry’s aggression and tries to find help at the casino’s entrance. Unfortunately, the beating continues.

Thankfully, the canine survived the ordeal without serious injury.

As a result of the abuse, Berry (who claims to have been “exceedingly drunk” during the event) was initially charged with two misdemeanors for animal cruelty and assaulting a public safety dog.

Part of the plea deal, however, is that the latter charge be dropped. At a hearing next month, a judge will determine whether or not to accept the deal, which would result in Berry facing 90 days in jail and up to a $3,000 fine.

One of the big issues activists have with the ordeal is that Berry wasn’t fired from his job. Boone was placed with a new partner, but his admitted abuser will continue to work as a Ramsey County Sheriff’s deputy in a new position, reports The Dodo.

If you think this is unjust, animal welfare supporters have launched an online petition calling for “Justice for Boone.”

Notes the campaign:

“We are asking that he be fired, convicted of two misdemeanor counts and never be allowed to have or work with an animal again! The stakes are too high for the animals! This is simply unacceptable for an officer to conduct himself in this manner and he doesn’t deserve to wear a badge!”

What are your thoughts on this news? Does Deputy Berry deserve a harsher punishment for abusing Boone?
