Parents can sometimes impose cruel punishments unto their children. Whether they intentionally want to be cruel, or do not realize the effects of their punishment, recent years have not tolerated such acts. Their children may experience physical, psychological, and emotional trauma.
This unfortunately happened to teener Kelsey Johnson of Ohio. She just wanted to enjoy her life on her own terms and not be bothered by some harsh realities of the world we live in. But after a few days after her 13th birthday, she came face to face with some harsh realities. Her father did not approve of the highlights done to her hair, and harshly dealt discipline by chopping of her hair. The poor girl was devastated and cried her heart out. She just wanted to do something special for her birthday, and her mother, like any loving parent, gave her permission to get highlights done. But dad and stepmom did not approve of it and gave her a cruel and embarrassing form of punishment. They told her every action has consequences, as if to justify their punishment.
Kelsey’s mother desperately needed to do something about this cruel act. She decided to post on Facebook the before and after photos of her daughter’s extreme hair makeover. Kelsey was so ashamed she didn’t even want to show her face in the photos after the haircut. She was clearly embarrassed and traumatized. The posts created a mix of reactions from over 34,000 netizens. Many showed their anger and disgust for the father and stepmom, with insulting posts. Some were more conservative by explaining that this was a form of child abuse, and pointed out the emotional scars it could leave on the child. Well, with all the reactions, the Wood County Children’s Services and Haskins Police Chief Colby Caroll will launch an investigation to get to the bottom of things. The father and stepmom who happen to both be firefighters got suspended from work.
A few days after, Kelsey’s mother, Christin, took her daughter to a local hair salon in Toledo, Ohio, where the staff picked out and fitted her with a wig of her choice until her hair grows back. The smile on Kelsey’s face was priceless. Her eyes reflect the gratitude for the act as well.
Parents need to be more understanding of their kids, especially if they are separated. Kelsey’s father obviously was not, and did not care if his kid was scarred for life. He did not even consider the embarrassment and trauma his kid went through because of his harsh punishment. Maybe that is why Christin separated from him. We can only guess, but surely Kelsey’s father got the worse end of it.
