Anonymous Just Shut Down This Nation’s Websites For Killing Whales

Whales don’t have a voice, so the self-proclaimed hacktivist group Anonymous is speaking up for them.

Last week, five Icelandic government websites went offline – an inconvenience that lasted until midday Saturday.

According to Anonymous, the cyber attack was due for some time, as Iceland is one of the last three countries which continues to allow the butchering of the protected mammals.

The group vowed to expose and disrupt the cruel practices involved in Iceland’s whaling industry, while calling for a boycott against goods produced there.

“Whales do not have a voice. We will be a voice for them. Its time to speak out about this impending extinction of a species. Its time to let Iceland know we will not stand by and watch as they drive this animal to extinction,” said the group.

Despite an international moratorium on commercial whaling and pressure from international leaders, Iceland, Japan, and Norway continue to allow the unethical practice.

In fact, last year, Iceland set a quota of more than 300 whales to be taken for their meat, reports The Dodo. Much of what is harvested is shipped overseas to Japan.
