A detailed report into the US military’s use of torture overseas will be hidden from the public, a federal judge ruled on Thursday. The Senate report contained nearly 7,000 pages which allegedly show some of the most gruesome torture tactics used by US soldiers overseas.
The American public has been waiting for over a year for this decision, and many civil liberty organizations are now outraged that the government is going to keep this information secret.
“Congress has undoubted authority to keep its records secret, authority rooted in the Constitution, longstanding practice, and current congressional rules,” Washington, DC US District Judge James E. Boasberg said.
“At the end of the day the [American Civil Liberties Union] asks the court to interject itself into a high-profile conversation that has been carried out in a thoughtful and careful way by the other two branches of government. As this is no trivial invitation, it should not be blithely accepted. (The ACLU) and the public may well ultimately gain access to the document it seeks. But it is not for the Court to expedite that process,” Boasberg added.
The ACLU has been attempting to force the disclosure of these documents for many years, since the organization filed a FOIA request in 2013.
