After an incredible journey spanning almost six decades, an English grandmother has achieved an amazing milestone by finally graduating from university.
Angela Davidson, who embarked on her academic pursuit nearly 60 years ago, finally realized her dream of earning a degree in Animal Sciences.
Angela’s educational journey was put on hold when she became pregnant with her first child while studying at university. At that time, she was one of just six women pursuing studies in animal sciences. Despite her passion for learning, Angela made the difficult decision to pause her education to focus on building a family with her partner, whom she had met at the same college.
Six decades after leaving college, Angela Davidson went back to school and eventually graduated with honors in December of 2023.
As she walked onto the stage during graduation day, a member of the university told the crowd that “today [our] class of veterinary students numbers some 200; about 80% of them are women.”
In 1960, they continued, that number was just six, “and one of those students, Angela Davidson, still waits for her degree—and today she will get it.”
Reflecting on her decision to defer her studies, Angela shared that at the time, when she fell pregnant, the university was “unable to support her.” Despite this setback, Angela found fulfillment in her family life and went on to achieve great success in her professional endeavors.
The joy of Angela’s achievement was amplified by the presence of her loving family, including her children and grandchildren, who were all with her on her graduation day.
She shared, “It was a most wonderful morning. I’ve waited years for this. The early 1960s was a very different time for women and that has been acknowledged today—I felt such a warm atmosphere.”
“I’ve waited many years for this and my daughter who I was expecting when I left the course was here with me today to see me finally pick up my degree.”
