There are a number of people choosing to use their wealth for a good purpose. For example, Johnny Depp intends to purchase the site of Wounded Knee Massacre and gift it back to the Native American people, and a 95-year-old Jewish Holocaust survivor is funding the rescue of 2,000 Middle-Eastern Christians.

Such stories give one hope in humanity, and this latest news is no different.

Wang Yan, a dog-lover who, unfortunately, lost his own furry friend in 2012, went searching for a new companion when someone referred him to visit a slaughterhouse for dogs.

He told The Shanghaiist:

“I went looking everywhere, but all to no avail. Finally someone let me go into (a local slaughterhouse) to try my luck there.”

While Yan didn’t end up meeting a new furry friend, what he saw in the slaughterhouse shocked him. He witnessed horrific scenes of dogs suffering needlessly and being brutally killed.

The activist knew he couldn’t just let the poor pooches suffer, so decided to invest a significant amount of money into buying the slaughterhouse.

Yan, who is from the Jilin province of China, owns a steel manufacturing business.

Amazingly, not only did Wang purchase the slaughterhouse, he established a shelter for stray dogs. This commendable act took place a few years ago and has since saved the lives of over 2,000 dogs.

At present, over 200 dogs are cared for by the shelter. According to Yang, it’s a huge improvement, as it once housed over 1,000! Thankfully, plenty of generous citizens have been able to offer the pups loving homes.

The story would be perfect except for one detail: Yang sacrificed his wealth to help all the dogs and won’t accept any donations. What does he ask for instead?

“I do not accept monetary donations,” he said. “I only hope that kind-hearted people will be able to donate a few supplies to help build a home for these 200 dogs.”

We hope so, too.
