At the end of many large festivals, thousands of tents are usually left behind by people who have very little energy to pack up, and don’t plan on camping again anytime soon. A charity from the Netherlands has found a way to take these abandoned tents to help homeless people.

Bas Timmer and Alexander de Groot are the founders of the Sheltersuit concept, and they work with volunteers, may of whom are Syrian refugees to create the suits.

The suit has a detachable zipper portion at the bottom that works as a waterproof sleeping bag to protect the person from the elements, and it also comes with a storage backpack. The sleeping bag portion is detachable and can be stored in the backpack, making it easy to maneuver if needed.

According to the group’s website, “The purpose of our foundation is to produce and distribute as many suits for the homeless who are sleeping outside during extreme cold weather. The Sheltersuit is a wind- and water-resistant jacket and sleeping bag, constructed of water repellent and insulating fabrics. All materials are provided by our generous donators. This suit can be transformed into a full-body sleeping bag. Due to the outstanding quality of the insulating materials, the wearers of the Sheltersuit are assured of warmth and safety during cold weather. The foundation is always looking for enthusiastic people who want to offer their support. Supporting the foundation is possible in many different ways: by sharing your ideas, volunteering, donating materials, or donating a gift.”

The Standard reported that the design is currently on display at Dutch Design Week and that there may soon be a Kickstarter that will make these products more available to people in other parts of the world.
