California has finally revised their animal rights laws and will be the first state in the United States that bans the manufacturing, sale and purchase of fur products from selected wild animals. The state has also banned most animals from being a part of circus or entertainment performances after it was agreed upon by Governor Gavin Newsom last October 13th.

All manufacturing and sales of fur clothing, shoes, belts and bags will fully stop in 2023. Animal rights groups have seen this as a great leap against inhumane practices and endangerment towards wild animals. On the other hand, the fur industry in places like San Francisco and Los Angeles are facing a lot of repercussions towards the new law that has been placed.

Certain products made for religious or tribal purposes are excluded from the law. An example of this could be the sale of leather, sheepskin, deerskin, and sale of cat and dog fur. Those preserved by taxidermy is also excluded from the law. The sale of luxury products made out of animals like rabbits, minks and chinchillas will be restricted from the law and companies that violate the law could be fined a cost of $1000.

Cassie King, a representative from Direct Action Everywhere mentioned that everybody wants to keep animals safe and protected against all inhumane actions. DAE is also working on passing similar bills in Portland and Minneapolis as well.

People opposing this law have brought up a likely possibility of a demand of black market sales in this situation. Keith Kaplan from the Fur Information Council has coined this legislation as “radical vegan agenda” that wants to control what people wear and eat.

California, along with Hawaii and New Jersey have all teamed up in banning most animals to join the circus, aside from tamed horses, cats and dogs. Companies that violate this law can be charged with a fine amounting to $25,000. Circuses in the country with animal performances having been declining in popularity for quite a while now, and the law could possibly eradicate their existence completely.

The Southwest California Legislative Council commented saying that this animal ban would prevent viewers from enjoying a thrilling performance by watching animals in a circus, however there are already 18 existing circuses that do not include any animals in their shows and do quite well. Even PETA has supported all these laws. Legislations passed such as these that protect animals are important and California is surely going towards the right step of beginning this movement.
