Brothers Rescue Puppies Who Were Abandoned In The Middle Of A Desert

Late last month, brothers Briggs LocHaven and Chris Vanness were driving from Arizona to Colorado when they spotted two puppies left along the side of the road. At first, the men thought the creatures were prairie dogs. After all, they were in “literally the middle of nowhere.” As they neared the spots, however, it became clear that they were indeed puppies.

Vanness told The Dodo:

“At first we thought they were prairie dogs, until we got closer and were able to see exactly what they were. Then we stopped and got out of the car to check on them. They were friendly and severely dehydrated and starving and our hearts just sank. We didn’t have to capture them — they literally jumped in our car. We were speechless and our only thought was we need to get these guys some food and water and a bath.”

Aware that fluids and food need to be ingested slowly by those who have fasted or been starving for periods of time, the brothers took turns feeding the animals small amounts of food. Commented Vanness:

“Over the next 24 hours, we continued to feed them in small amounts… After about 10 hours they started to become more active and needing potty breaks.”

The pups made it the entire journey to Colorado. When the destination had been reached, the men contacted a friend who rescues dogs and asked for help with the pooches. The story has a happy ending, as both dogs found loving, forever homes.

“They both have found an amazing home and family with [another] rescue dog! And they get to stay together!” LocHaven wrote in an update. “Makes my heart warm and happy!”
