With numerous stories of police brutality in the media nowadays, it’s heartening to hear some positive news that concerns law enforcement workers. This story is one of them.
Last week, Officer James Givens of the Cincinnati Police Department was sitting in his patrol car when he was accosted by a very unexpected visitor. The creature in need was a goose, and she seemed dead set on getting his attention.
“This goose came up and started pecking on the side of the car,” Givens told The Dodo. “I threw some food out for her, but she didn’t take it. She just kept pecking and quacking. Then she walked away, stopped and looked back. Then came over again and pecked some more.”
It was when the goose walked away for a second time that Officer Givens decided to follow her. Relaying the extraordinary story to the press, he shared that he is glad he did so. In his twenty-six years of service, he has never had an experience like this one.
Said Givens:
“She led me about 100 yards away to this grassy area near a creek. That’s when I saw one of her babies all tangled up in some string from a balloon. His little feet were kicking. She led me straight to him.”
Givens was wary to approach the gosling for he feared the goose might attack if he did. So, he instead radioed the SPCA. Unfortunately, no wildlife rescuers were immediately available. That’s when the officer’s colleague, Officer Cecilia Charron, heard the call and volunteered to help.
“She showed up on her own,” he said. “I told her to be careful, but she just walked over and untangled the baby. The mother goose just watched, like she knew. It was amazing.”
As soon as the baby was untangled, it reunited with its mother and they safely swam away. As you can imagine, the officers were in disbelief about how it all played out. Charon even started to tear up, telling her colleague that the experience was the highlight of her 24 years on the force.
Officer Givens told the press:
“It seems like something made up. It was just incredible. I honestly don’t know why I decided to follow her, but I did. It makes me wonder — do they know to turn to humans when they need help?”
This amazing story is sure to reignite your faith in the possibility of compassionate officers. While certain law enforcement workers do abuse their power, there will always be policemen like Charron and Givens who will go the extra mile to help any creature in need.
