Baltimore, MD April 27th 2015: In a press release the Baltimore Police Department/Criminal Intelligence unit states that they have received a credible threat claiming that various gangs have entered into a partnership “to take out” law enforcement officers.
The mainstream media have been hyping this story since it was released this afternoon, but what is not being said is the source of this threat was or the nature of the threat itself. Police apologist have flocked to the Baltimore Police Department’s Facebook page praising the department and offering their support. One poster suggested that hunters and gun owners should declare “open season” on the Black Guerrilla Family, Crips, and Bloods.
As reported by The Daily Beast noted that the Bloods and Crips have called a truce, uniting to protest the death of Freddie Gray in a deal brokered by the Nation of Islam. Carlos Muhammad, a minister at Nation of Islam’s Mosque No. 6 said “I can say with honesty those brothers demonstrated they can be united for a common good,”.
“This is our part in helping to keep peace and to keep protesters in a situation where they’re not in confrontation with police,” Muhammad said.
Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake in a press conference gave praise to the Nation of Islam for brokering this peace effort, she said, “I want to also thank the Nation of Islam, who have been very present in our efforts to keep calm and peace in our city”. Afterwards Grey’s twin sister Fredericka pleaded “My family wants to say, can you all please, please stop the violence?”.
With the announced truce over the weekend it begs one to question the Baltimore Police and the true credibility of this threat. This announcement seems more like a Counter Intelligence Program (COINTELPRO). COINTELPRO was developed by the FBI in the mid 50’s to the 70’s, the program is aimed at discrediting/disrupting political organization’s thru out the United States targeting civil rights leaders, activists, journalist, and athletes. What a perfect time to deploy a program like this when the communities they are trying to oppress are coming together in unity.
We often forget that these groups rose up in response to rampant police brutality in the late 60’s. Groups like the Black Panther’s formed to patrol and monitor police behavior in their communities and challenge police brutality. Leading the group to develop community social programs such as free breakfast for children program and community health clinics. Why do the police feel so threatened by groups that are focused on developing their communities without the assistance of the government?
Now a days insisting on your privacy is enough to be labeled a terrorist by the FBI. The FBI’s practical shorthand definition of domestic terrorism is “Americans attacking Americans based on U.S.-based extremist ideologies.”
What are your thoughts on this “credible threat”? Is this really a threat or an excuse for the Baltimore Police to escalate the use of force? Another fear based tactic? Let us know what you think in the comments below.
