Just as Wikileaks released stunning evidence exonerating its founder Julian Assange of the charges that have kept him detained in London’s Ecuadorian Embassy, the US Central Intelligence Agency has now officially condemned the transparency organization as “Russian agents” who allegedly worked with the Russian government to ensure the Donald Trump’s victory in last month’s presidential election. According to reports from the Washington Post and the New York Times, a secret CIA assessment presented to a select group of US lawmakers found that Russian operatives covertly interfered in the election campaign to ensure Trump’s victory over his opponent Hillary Clinton. Anonymous officials briefed on the matter also claimed that the Russian government directly provided Wikileaks with confidential emails belonging to the Democratic National Committee (DNC) and Clinton insiders. They went on to say the Wikileaks published the emails on Russia’s behalf as part of a larger plan to keep Hillary Clinton from being elected.

The testimony of this “secret” assessment and these anonymous officials led President Obama to announce a review of “foreign intervention” into the 2016 election just yesterday. The report will be delivered to Obama before he leaves office on January 20th. Obama has already issued a premature warning to Russian President Vladimir Putin about “consequences” for the alleged Russian interference and cyber-attacks. Russia, for its part, has strongly denied all involvement. Obama’s homeland security adviser, Lisa Monaco, has said that the secret assessments results would be shared with “a range of stakeholders,” including some Congressmen but not the general public. Trump’s transition team were quick to respond to the assessment’s conclusions, arguing that “these are the same people that said Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction. The election ended a long time ago in one of the biggest Electoral College victories in history. It’s now time to move on and ‘Make America Great Again.”

Indeed, there is plenty of reason to doubt the CIA’s assessment of the situation as they have proven time and again to be no partial party, having interfered in thousands of elections around the world themselves. The CIA’s history of overthrowing governments also recently led Donald Trump to respond to the latest allegations, calling it a “soft coup” attempt. The media organizations covering these accusations, namely the Washington Post and New York Times, were also shown to have colluded with Clinton’s campaign to help her chances in the US election.

These latest accusations are also suspiciously timed, occurring a little less than a week before the Electoral College officially elects Trump as President. Some Clinton supporters have petitioned electors to vote for Clinton or someone other than Trump. The official vote of the Electoral College could be manipulated if the CIA releases a report to Obama claiming the results were falsified or unduly influenced by Russia in some way, or Obama could alternatively decide to throw the election results out. These latest intelligence findings could very easily be laying the groundwork for such a move as the corporate media and various pundits have lately been mentioning that “something crazy” might happen that would prevent Trump from becoming President. If such an unprecedented event were to occur, chaos would be the only predictable consequence.
