In an extremely odd twist, this boat crew wound up witnessing something not many humans have seen before and they were happy to share their experience.
The crew on the Maiken, a yacht traveling in the South Pacific after performing checking out procedures, first encountered what they described as “brown, somewhat grainy streaks in the water” as they moved through the ocean. But as they moved forward, the streaks became clumps and were more frequently spotted in the vast body of water.
Soon, the clumps had formed into what appeared to be a sandbar, but the crew wasn’t fooled. They realized that the debris surrounding them was pumice stone rising from the depths of the ocean and creating its own little “beach.”
The crew was fascinated as they watched the pumice stone quickly become denser, and even sailed through it, leaving a trail behind them in the “sand.” The expanse of surface area covered in pumice grew into a miles wide shoreline of stone.
Just as quickly as they entered the area, they recognized that the stone posed a threat to their boat. While the pumice looked beautiful from above, it was slowly killing the yacht by obstructing their water filter.
The Maiken turned back around to make their way back into normal waters and lingered there in order to clean out the filter and restart their engine. Since there was no wind on this particular day, the yacht had to rely solely on motor-power, and the effectiveness of the motor wound up saving their lives.
Just as the crew was a few miles from the stone, they turned to hear a rumbling sound coming from the expanse. Smoke and water shot up from the ocean and the crew then realized what was happening: an underwater volcano was erupting before their very eyes!
The release of pumice is a precursor to a volcanic eruption because pumice stone is volcanic rock that becomes loose when the volcano begins to rumble. While it’s already rare enough to witness a volcanic eruption and live to tell the tale, the crew then saw something they couldn’t believe.
As the smoke cleared, they saw something amazing: the eruption had created a new, small island. They actually witnessed the birth of an island, with all its unique peaks and valleys.
This is truly a rare sight to behold, and the crew of this yacht is incredibly lucky to have both witnessed it and captured it on camera.
