How much do we really know about GMO crops in the food chain?
Here we get a cameo from Bill Nye the science guy, and his question raises an important point about GMO crops. He asks about the timescales involved in the process and the answer is pretty revealing about what we don’t know about GMO (genetically modified organism) crops rather than what we do.
Charles Benbrook, is a research professor at the Center of Sustaining Agriculture and Natural Resources. Professor Benbrook points out that the speed at which we are moving from one generation of these crops to another allows no time for research into the effects of the previous generations impact on the environment. This is a scary prospect if you think about it. It means that the technology is moving so fast that there is never any review period.
