Prolific big game hunter Theunis Botha, 51, recently died while leading a group of hunters in Gwai, Zimbabwe. Reportedly, the group was approaching a herd of breeding elephants when three of the mammals stormed the humans. When Botha, of Johannesburg, South Africa, shot at them, a fourth was prompted to attack and proceeded to lift Botha with her trunk.

In an attempt to save the hunting leader, members of the group shot at the elephant, killing her. When she collapsed, however, she crushed Botha, reports Afrikaans news site Netwerk24. Simukai Nyasha, a spokesman for Zimparks, stated that the incident happened last Friday, at the Good Luck Farm near Hwange National Park.

Botha was infamous for leading leopard and lion hunting safaris with his pack of dogs. His website states that he pioneered European-style “Monteira hunts” in southern African countries. As The Telegraph reports, Monteira hunts involve using large packs of dogs to drive deer and boar towards them. Then, the hunters open fire on the animals.

The deceased also frequently traveled to the U.S. to find wealthy clients to take on trophy hunts.
