Baby Elephant Rescued In 8-Hour Operation After Falling Into 30-Foot Deep Well

News Verve

The story of an adorable baby elephant has gone viral after it found itself stuck inside a 30-foot (9 meters) deep well in a small Indian village.

On May 2, the young calf was walking alongside the rest of his herd as they passed through the forest in Giridih district on its way through Nimatand village, which is located in the eastern state of Jharkhand. While the resident villagers were attempting to shoo away the group of giant elephants, they would soon find out that one of the babies had gotten himself in a very deep pickle, a 30-foot deep well to be exact.

What ensued was a complicated rescue mission involving the local forest department, where they put into use three backhoes in order to break down the massive wall of the brick well. The idea was to excavate the area until they created an inclined trench big enough for him to walk on and get out of the deep well.

According to Shashikant Verma, the local government official who was also photographing the rescue mission, “Unfortunately, in the dark of the night, roughly around 9 p.m. local time, an elephant calf fell into the well.”

“The (water) level wasn’t high enough, but the calf got some buoyancy after falling and didn’t get any injuries,” he added.

After the villagers managed to alert the local forest department, they quickly began their rescue efforts, choosing to destroy one entire wall of the well with the three backhoes in order to get the calf to walk out, rather than lift him out vertically, which was one of the earlier plans.

Incredibly, the rescue mission took a total of eight hours to accomplish, counting the hours until the pachyderm managed to walk out of the well all on its own, muddy and probably incredibly scared, but amazingly unharmed.

They also share that the wall will eventually be rebuilt by the locals and the government at some point, but the fact that they saved the young elephant was worth every broken brick and continuous effort from the team to get the little guy back to safety.
