It’s not like most politicians to practice what they preach, but Senator Sanders and his wife both seem to be anomalies. Not only has Bernie maintained his well-established integrity throughout his campaign, his wife, Jane, even restored a bit of faith in ‘the system’ when she responded to Donald Trump’s latest attack on Hilary Clinton.
When Andrea Mitchell of MSNBC News asked Mrs. Sanders if she agreed with the latest of Trump’s bigoted statements – in which he called Hillary “evil,” she declared the following:
“No, No. Absolutely not. We’ve known Bill and Hillary for years. And we’re not friends, but colleagues. That has no place in politics today, I don’t think, Bernie doesn’t think. We think that the most important thing we can do is to lead by example, to treat others as we would have them treat us, and I hope that it is reciprocal. We’re not going to play that game.”
Jane matter-of-factly called Hillary a great first lady and even put her in the same category as Eleanor Roosevelt. Clearly, neither she nor Bernie will stand for low-level bullying or chauvinism.
This isn’t the first time one of the Sanders has shown through example the decent way to treat other human beings. When Donald Trump made a big deal of Hillary Clinton going to the bathroom, Sanders made a big joke out of it during a rally in the midwest.
You don’t beat bullies by stooping to their level. You treat them with all the respect deserved by those affected by your actions and let karma – or their own stupidity – boot them from the race.
